ADVOCATE'S CORNER...............by Rob Stuart

Welcome to the 5th issue of the AUSTIN ADVOCATE.
This issue goes out around the world as follows:
USA: 575, Canada: 38, England: 35, France: 1, Spain: 1, Germany: 1, Belgium: 1, Sweden: 2, Netherlands: 1, India: 1, Egypt: 1, Costa Rica: 1, Brazil: 3, Uruguay: 1, Philippines: 1, Australia: 40, and New Zealand: 19.

Many events were held around the world this year to celebrate the Austins.

England: Enthusiasts gathered at the Longbridge factory to mark the 50th anniversary of the A90 Atlantic and A70 Hampshire, the Austin Counties Car Club had its annual club rally, and the second Flying-A Rally was a big success.

Australia: Plans continue for the Austins Over Australia event to be held in South Australia in 1999. The Austin Motor Vehicle Club of Queensland toured a former Austin assembly plant. The Austin A90 Club Rally was held in South Australia.

New Zealand: The 2nd All Austin National Rally was held early in the year.

Canada: The British Saloon Car Club just marked its fourth birthday with Issue 25 of THE OILY RAG.

America: The All British Field Meets in California brought out some Austins never before seen. Dick Collins of Buffalo, New York hosted a large gathering of street rods at the annual Willys Home Run.

Growing interest in street rods and nostalgia drag racing has created an increase in the number of modernized Austins on the road. Many Austins, Anglia, Willys, and Henry J owner/builders are burning the midnight oil with the goal of heading to St. Louis in June of 1999 for the "Gateway Gasser Gathering" .

AUSTINS IN ENGLAND

50th Anniversary for Atlantic and Hampshire
......................................................by Dave Whyley

The weather was just right as we pulled into the special visitors car park at Longbridge on Sunday 28 June. The sight that greeted us was unique. Atlantics and Hampshires all gathered together for the first time at the place that they were built 50 years ago. My Devon seemed out of place as I parked up, but as I do not own either of the two anniversary models, it was the next best thing, and anyway the Hampshire owes quite a lot in terms of styling to the humble Devon.

Over the next half-hour Atlantics and Hampshires burbled on to the car park, until 13 Atlantics and Hampshires (including a rare pickup) were lined up. A unique sight and one which will not be seen again for many years.

First to move into place for the many photo calls of the day were the Hampshires, all neatly lined up in front of the exhibition hall. Then in turn came the Atlantic drop-heads followed by the coupes. While all of this snapping was taking place owners, friends and relatives were chatting to each other and the gang of ex-employees who I had invited to attend. Guest of honour was Diana Hess the wife of the late Alan Hess, the Austin Motor Company's public relations officer for the period of the Counties range of cars. Mark Yeomans had invited her to attend along with her brother and it was only fitting that she should have her photograph taken by Barney Sharratt in a beautiful white Atlantic convertible for Classic Car Weekly.

At the end of the Longbridge section of the event all vehicles made their way to Gaydon. After lunch the packed lecture theatre was used for an illustrated slide talk by yours truly on the history of the Atlantic and Hampshire. We then reached the surprise of the day. Mark and I had with some investigation tracked down the only known film footage of the Atlantic completing its record attempt at Indianapolis in 1949. It was short but sweet, and many thanks go out to all those who contributed donations to offset the cost of the film.

Many thanks to every one who helped to make the day such a success. The next anniversary event will be held in 2000 to celebrate the Austin Hereford and the A40 Sports.
